CONSULTANCY

 

Over the years, our work has developed through extensive engagement with the prison system, particularly in matters concerning life imprisonment, detention, and the rights and experiences of prisoners and their families. Drawing on both lived experience and professional knowledge, we have developed particular expertise in the intersection between prison practice, law, mental health, trauma, and systemic disadvantage. A significant part of our work involves supporting and informing litigation and legal advocacy, including matters concerning discriminatory policies and practices, arbitrary detention, procedural unfairness, institutional harm, and structural deficiencies within prison systems. 

 

We are engaged by legal practitioners and others working on complex cases to provide contextual insight, identify systemic issues, and assist in understanding how the practical realities of imprisonment may inform legal arguments and evidential issues. This work extends beyond domestic contexts and includes engagement with legal experts and proceedings involving international and comparative perspectives. Our experience also encompasses prison family support, prison education, inquests, trauma-informed practice in prison and psychiatric settings, and wider prison-related campaigns and reviews. 

 

We contribute to legal proceedings, thematic reviews, workshops, research, and publications, bringing together lived experience, practical knowledge, and an understanding of the wider legal and systemic context.

 

Through this work, we aim to bring greater attention to the realities of imprisonment and the lasting impact it has on prisoners and their families, helping to ensure that these experiences are better understood and reflected in legal proceedings, policy, research, media, and wider public discussion.
